imo it bookmatches fine enough. were it mine i'd fixate on the really dark brown streaks at both ends (one at the tail seam and one at the upper bout.) don't worry. make a guitar with it, move on, and make more

I am trying my first complete build. I thought my back plates were purdy. I polished them abit, took the sides out of the mold and used it for a template to cut out the shape. I was not trying to make it left-handed. I will endeavor to try again. This won't not suit turned around inside out as the pattern drifts. I did like it. It is upsetting to have ruined the piece of wood. Perhaps I need to meet left-handed people. |

Arie is correct. Just turn it inside out. Doubtful if the grain will be dramatically different on that side. |

$hit happens...been there, done that and yes hog tops are nice. So are double cutaways. |

I guess it is not as bad "inside out" as I thought. I just keep looking at the dark spot circled. I know it is just the turn of the grain. I will always look at and know its wrong. Perhaps I'll forget this by tomorrow. |

Inside Out is just fine! A little extra chatoyance in that curl, but it doesn't detract. |

Looks fine to me. The cutaway throws off the symmetry a lot more than that little grain swirl

No problem there! Just build the thing. If you are anything like me building my first (second, third) you will soon make another mistake and you will stop worryng about the last one. But it will be great in the end. Cheers Mark |

Looks great reversed and don't feel bad I have a OM cutaway top for a future lefty, we all have brain farts once in a while though that was my biggest. Fred |

The dark spot is a beautiful feature of the wood. Go with it and celebrate it. Don't down-play it. Call everyone's attention to it. Tell them you made it this way to feature that spot. I promise you, everyone will love it. Patrick |

I seriously doubt that you are the first....  While I have not done this, I did come close one time.(1st cutaway) I now double, triple, etc check before cutting anything.... Looks fine to me, too..... |

Looks good as is. Have you thicknesed it yet? The more you take off from the wrong side, the more it will look like the right side. |

From where I sit, it looks like any other book match. Rarely in woodworking does anything come out perfectly symmetrical. You were a bit luckier with the reverse, but this looks great. If you ever resaw your own wood you will become aware of this. Don't sweat it; the back looks good either way. |

Besides, the other lines on this side are darker, and more defined, giving more contrast. But in case you want to feel better: 1. place it on a towel on your bench, dark spot side down. 2. swing a chisel back and forth over the lower end where it won't show through the sound hole. 3. See how close you can swing it before it hits the board. 4. Once it hits, you're done. This is the solution to the lunch problem, back in the day when we wore neckties to work. Once you got a spot on your tie, someone at the table would say "well, you can relax now!" Honestly, it's gonna look great. To me, this piece is more like two sides of a coin. If you had told us you like this side because you prefer the stronger contrast over the smoother look, no one would have given it another thought. |
